Using VLC Media Player Download to Convert Video Files

VLC Media Player is one of the most widely used media players available. It's free to download, compatible with almost all video file types, and can be customized with a litany of extensions to suit your needs. But are you getting the most out of your VLC Media Player download?

VLC Media Player is filled extra features that many users don't even know about. It can capture and record video clips, be used to download YouTube videos, and even contains a hidden jigsaw puzzle game as an Easter egg. But probably its most useful extra feature is its robust video conversion suite.

Using Your VLC Media Player Download to Convert Video Files

VLC Media Player can convert videos into virtually any other file type in a few quick and easy steps.

Step 1: Download VLC Media Player

If you have not done so already, you'll want to take advantage of a free VLC Media Player download. If you do already have it installed, double check to make sure that you have the most recent version.

Step 2: Click on the "Media" Menu

In the drop-down menu that opens up, find the "Convert/Save..." option. It should be the fourth from the bottom. Click on it.

Step 3: Select the Videos You Want to Convert

In the pop-up menu that appears, find the "File Selection" panel under the "File" tab. Click the adjacent "Add" button to browse through your computer and find the files you would like to convert. At this stage, you also have the option to embed a subtitle file with your video if you have one.

Step 4: Chose a Destination and Select a Codec

Click the "Convert/Save" button in the bottom right corner to progress to the next window. You will need to choose a destination folder for the converted file. You can also rename the file at this time.

There will be a drop-down menu listed as "Profile". Here you can select the file format you will be converting to. There are several preset options available that will optimize your video for different purposes. There are suitable presets for uploading to YouTube or for playback on a mobile device.

Alternatively, you can click the icon of a wrench and a screwdriver to access the editing menu. Here you will have the option to specify exactly what profiles and codecs you would like to you use. You will also have the option to apply filters if you so desire.

Step 5: Start Converting

Once you have everything set up to your satisfaction, click the "Save" button to begin the process. VLC should start converting, while also playing back the video on-screen at twice the normal speed. All you need to do is wait for it to finish up.

Make the Most of Your Freeware

There are plenty of media converters available, often packaged as part of an expensive video editing suite. But most of them don't do anything that a VLC Media Player download won't do for free.

It just goes to show that before putting down good money on some fancy new software, you should always check to make sure someone isn't already giving it away for free.
